UIG knows tanks.  When choosing a liquid or dry bulk storage tank system you should take into consideration several key issues such as quality of the tank material, suitability of the tank material for the product being stored, budget and construction type. The most common tank designs are bolted steel (either glass fused to steel, epoxy coated or stainless steel), field welded, shop fabricated, fiberglass or concrete.

Bolted Steel Tanks are excellent choices for large capacity tank projects due to their quick installation.  They have the benefit of being able to be disassembled and moved to another location or have one panel removed to add extra nozzles, man ways etc.  They also may be installed using local labor with a certified UIG Supervisor to guide the installation.

Epoxy and Glass Fused-to-Steel Bolted Tanks are a cost effective, low maintenance and highly corrosion resistant alternative to welded steel tanks.  They offer quick construction in the field and are easily expandable.  Glass fused to steel tanks are a superior choice for potable water, fire water and wastewater treatment plants.

Field Welded Steel Tanks are notable for their ability to hold product in very large capacities.  UIG field welded tanks are available up to 25 million gallon capacities and are exceptional for water and fuel storage.  Field welded tanks are an excellent choice for fuel and gasoline storage.

Shop Fabricated Welded Tanks are economical for small volume tanks.  They are welded and coated in the factory and are shipped ready to install at the jobsite.  Shop Fabricated sizes may be limited due to shipping constraints.



Regardless of coating type, bolted steel tanks are a high quality, safe and economical solution to field welded storage tanks. Some of the differences are as follows:

COATINGS – are applied under factory controlled conditions where Field Welded Steel Tank coatings are field applied and are subject to weather and other conditions.  Additionally welded tanks are field coated after days welding and exposure to the elements which leads to oxidation.

FLOORS – are the most vulnerable area of a tank to corrosion due to the contact with the ground.  Bolted Steel Tank floor plates are factory coated on both sides giving protection not only to the tank interior floor, but the exterior floor bottom which is exposed to the ground.  Welded steel floors are coated only on the top side (interior) leaving untreated steel bottom side exposed to the concrete foundation.  Bolted tanks also allow for the option of an embedded sidewall directly into a concrete foundation/floor thereby eliminating additional steel and corrosion potential.  This option is not available in welded tanks.

ERECTION TIME – Bolted Steel Tanks are more than 50% quicker to install than Field Welded Tanks which require rigging, fitting, welding, blasting and coating processes.

REPAIRABILTY –  Bolted Steel Tanks may be repaired in the field with either touch up epoxy, sealant or by replacing a single panel.  Field Welded Tanks require much more time and are more costly to repair due to preparation and coating issues.

SAFETY –  Bolted Steel Tank are installed without the use of welding making them the perfect solution for areas where heat and flame are prohibited or dangerous such as forests and petroleum storage farms.

PRICE-  Bolted Steel Tanks provide less up front costs, less installation costs and less maintenance costs than their Field Welded counterparts while providing a competitive Lifespan.


When choosing a Glass Fused to Steel Storage Tank you should take into consideration design and manufacturing factors which may shorten the life of your tank.

UIG utilizes thinner coatings than other manufacturers which increases the role of the base metal’s mechanical properties, providing a harder, more flexible, less brittle and greater chip resistant tank panel.  UIG’s proprietary enamel frits and high Titanium (Ti) content carbon steel provide unparalleled adhesion.  Proper coating thickness is key to elasticity and longevity.  The tensile strength is approximately the yield point of the base metal. In general, thinner porcelain enamel coatings are more flexible and have greater resistance to fracture.  Thicker coatings have better electrical properties and are used on sinks, lavatories and bathtubs.  Normally, heavier coatings are used on cast iron or heavy steel where rigidity of the substrate resists deformation and reduces the danger of fracture.  Thickness over 15-mils is not generally recommended for sheet/plate metal parts because of warping and/or chipping problems.

UIG also uses proprietary steel specifically manufactured for the enameling process.  Other manufacturers use a poorer quality A1011 Carbon Steel base (not recommended for durable and quality glass fused bonding) which is the least expensive steel and contains levels of carbon that will make it difficult for good glass adhesion.  Many manufacturers apply a toxic nickel oxide to cover up the carbon defect in inferior steel in order to apply their two-coat/two-fire enameling process which will leach through any pinholes.  As a result they end up with thicker coating that has the tendency to fish scale, sag, has low adherence and cracks easily.

Sheet edges have to be properly coated with the same enamel material in order to avoid electrolysis of dissimilar metals, rust, weakening of the enamel bonding and allowing their nickel oxide to leak through. UIG rounds the edges and coats them completely.  To save time and cost, other manufacturers leave sharp edges on their panels and they coat them cosmetically with a stainless steel strip.  This creates three dissimilar metals to cover their defects
